Handover begins before completion
A reliable handover pack is built during the project. Test results, changes, product information and commissioning records should be captured as work progresses, not chased after the installation team has left site.
Agree the document structure, naming and responsibilities during pre-construction. This is especially important when information comes from multiple subcontractors and specialist systems.
Core electrical information
The exact requirements depend on project scope and contract, but the owner should receive enough verified information to operate and maintain the installation safely.
- Relevant certificates and test results
- Distribution board and circuit schedules
- Record drawings where required
- Product and warranty information
- Settings and commissioning records
- Key contacts and escalation routes
Demonstrate systems in realistic scenarios
A handover demonstration should be appropriate to the user. Facilities teams may need alarm, scheduling and override training; homeowners may need scene, app and security guidance. Record outstanding adjustments and who owns each action.
Plan the first review
Some settings are best refined after a building has been occupied. Lighting scenes, time schedules and temperature strategies may benefit from an agreed post-occupancy review once users have practical feedback.
This guide is general information. Electrical design, installation and testing should be assessed against the property, current standards and the exact project scope.
